Frequently Asked Moving Questions

Have questions about your move? We've answered the most common ones below, organized by topic. Don't see what you're looking for? Call us at 800-634-3155 or request a free estimate — we're always happy to help.

Booking & Estimates

How far in advance should I book my move?

We recommend booking 4–6 weeks in advance, especially May through September. That said, we understand life sometimes moves quickly. We can almost always accommodate last-minute moves — give us a call and we'll see what we can do.

Do you offer in-home consultations?

Yes. We strongly recommend an in-home consultation for all moves. During the consultation one of our relocation consultants will walk through your home, assess the size and scope of your move, answer your questions, and provide an accurate, transparent estimate. In-home consultations are completely free and come with no obligation. An in-home assessment is always more accurate than an estimate provided over the phone or online.

Does your estimate include packing materials?

If you choose our professional packing services all packing materials are included in your estimate. If you are packing yourself and would like to purchase boxes and packing supplies from Allwest those costs will be itemized separately. Your relocation consultant will clearly outline what is and is not included in your estimate during your in-home consultation so you have a complete and accurate picture of your total moving costs.

How do I get a free estimate?

Getting a free estimate from Allwest is easy. You can fill out the quote request on our website, call us directly at 360-943-4990, or send us an email. One of our experienced relocation consultants will reach out promptly to schedule a free in-home consultation at a time that is convenient for you.

Are moving expenses tax deductible?

For most people, moving expenses are no longer tax deductible following the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which suspended the deduction through 2025 for everyone except active-duty military members moving due to permanent change of station orders. Active-duty service members may still qualify. Allwest is not a tax advisor — consult a tax professional about your specific situation.

What's the best day of the week to move?

Mid-week moves (Tuesday through Thursday) are typically less busy and easier to schedule than weekends. Weekends and the first and last few days of the month tend to book up the earliest. If your schedule is flexible, a mid-week, mid-month date often gives you the most options.

What's the busiest time of year for movers?

The peak moving season runs from May through September, when demand is highest and dates fill quickly. If you're moving during these months, we recommend booking as early as possible. Moves during the fall and winter often have more date flexibility.

Can I change my move date after booking?

Yes. We understand plans change. Just contact us as soon as you know, and we'll do our best to accommodate your new date based on availability. The earlier you let us know, the easier it is to find a date that works for you.

What information do you need to give me an estimate?

For the most accurate estimate, we'll want to know your origin and destination, the size of your home, an idea of what's being moved, your preferred timing, and any special items or access challenges (stairs, elevators, long carries). An in-home or virtual consultation lets us see everything firsthand for the most precise quote.

Moving Costs & Pricing

How much does a move cost? How much do movers cost?

Moving costs vary based on several key factors including the size of your home, the distance of your move, the amount of furniture and belongings, whether packing services are included, and the time of year. As a general reference, local moves for a two to three bedroom home in Western Washington typically range from several hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the scope of work. Local moves under 55 miles commonly cost $500–$3,500+, while long-distance moves of 1,000+ miles range from $1,500–$8,500+. Home size, distance, shipment weight, and service level all affect your final cost. The most accurate way to get a fair price is through a free in-home estimate, which allows our relocation consultant to assess your specific situation and provide a transparent, detailed quote with no hidden fees. Contact us today to schedule yours.

Do you charge by the hour or by the job?

Local moves are typically priced on an hourly basis based on the number of movers and trucks required. Long distance and interstate moves are generally priced based on the total weight of the shipment and the distance to the destination. In both cases your relocation consultant will clearly explain how your specific move will be priced during your free in-home consultation so there are no surprises on moving day.

What payment methods do you accept?

Allwest accepts multiple payment methods for your convenience including all major credit cards. Ask us about our financing option! Please contact our office at 360-943-4990 or ask your relocation consultant during your in-home consultation for current accepted payment options. We are happy to discuss payment arrangements that work for your situation.

Are there any hidden fees?

Never. Allwest is committed to transparent, straightforward pricing with no hidden fees. Your written estimate will clearly outline all costs associated with your move including labor, transportation, packing materials if applicable, and any additional services requested. We review the estimate with you in detail before your move so you know exactly what to expect. If any changes to the scope of work arise on moving day we will discuss them with you before proceeding.

Do you require a deposit?

No. In fact, if another moving company requires a deposit, you should consider that a big RED FLAG. We strive to make the financial side of your move as straightforward and stress-free as the move itself. Contact us at 360-943-4990 for specific information about deposit requirements for your move.

How much does it cost to hire movers for a one-bedroom apartment?

A local one-bedroom apartment move in the Puget Sound region typically costs between $600 and $1200, depending on factors like distance, access (stairs or elevators), and whether you need packing services. There are a multitude of factors that may affect this. Allwest provides a free, detailed written estimate so you know your exact cost before move day.

How can I lower the cost of my move?

A few simple steps can reduce your moving cost: declutter and donate items you no longer need before move day, pack what you can yourself, be flexible on timing (mid-week and off-season are often less expensive), and make sure everything is boxed and ready when the crew arrives so no time is spent waiting. Your relocation consultant can suggest other ways to fit your move to your budget.

Do you offer free moving quotes?

Yes. All Allwest estimates are completely free and come with no obligation. We provide free in-home and virtual consultations so you get an accurate, transparent quote before you commit to anything.

Why do moving quotes vary so much between companies?

Moving quotes vary because of differences in pricing structure, level of service, licensing and insurance, and how thoroughly a company assesses your move. Be cautious of quotes that seem unusually low — they sometimes signal hidden fees, inadequate insurance, or unlicensed operators. Allwest provides transparent, detailed written estimates so you can compare fairly. All of our Relocation Consultants (estimators) have been in the industry for more than twenty years, working in multiple aspects of the business. We take tremendous pride in delivering accurate, honest estimates to our clients.

Is it cheaper to move during the week?

Often, yes. Mid-week moves (Tuesday through Thursday) and off-season moves (October through April) tend to have more availability and can be more economical than weekend or peak-season moves. Ask your relocation consultant about flexible scheduling options.

Long Distance & Interstate Moves

How does long distance moving pricing work?

Long distance moves are priced based on the total weight of your shipment and the distance traveled. There is also a wide range of additional services available such as storage-in-transit, professional packing, vehicle transport and more. Your Allwest relocation consultant will provide a detailed and itemized, free estimate so you know exactly what to expect before moving day.

How long does a long distance move take?

Transit times vary based on distance and destination. Your Allwest relocation consultant will provide an estimated delivery window when you book — and as a Wheaton Worldwide agent we have the nationwide network to keep your move on schedule.

Can Allwest move me anywhere in the United States?

Yes. As a Wheaton Worldwide Moving agent, Allwest has the resources and nationwide network to move you to any destination in the continental United States.

What happens if my belongings are damaged during a long distance move?

Allwest takes every precaution to protect your belongings during transit. We offer a range of valuation coverage options to give you added peace of mind. Ask your relocation consultant about coverage options when you request your estimate.

Can I ship my car with my long distance move?

Yes! Ask your Allwest relocation consultant about vehicle shipping options when you book your long distance move. We can coordinate vehicle transport alongside your household goods for a seamless relocation experience.

What is the difference between local and long distance moving? What is the difference between a local move and an intrastate move in Washington?

A local move is generally any move within 55 miles inside Washington State, priced by the hour. A long distance move crosses state lines or travels well beyond your local area (55 miles), and is priced based on shipment weight and distance. Any move travelling more than 55 miles but remaining inside Washington State, is considered an intrastate move. Pricing is based on shipment weight and distance. Long distance moves crossing state lines involve additional federal regulations and longer transit times, which is why Allwest coordinates them through our Wheaton Worldwide network.

Will my belongings be on the same truck the whole way?

For most long distance moves through our Wheaton Worldwide network, your belongings stay together throughout transit. Your relocation consultant will explain exactly how your specific shipment will be handled when you book, so you know what to expect from pickup to delivery.

Will my belongings be on the same truck with another customer's belongings?

For shipments remaining in Washington, typically no. For interstate moves, depending on size, yes. A standard 53' household goods trailer can fit around 25,000 to 30,000 pounds. When there are multiple shipments on a truck they are separated by a bulkhead and each customer's belongings are individually inventoried. Wheaton World Wide Moving does offer exclusive use - just let us know when you get your estimate and we are more than happy to set that up.

How are interstate moving costs calculated?

Interstate moving costs are based primarily on the total weight of your shipment and the distance traveled, plus any additional services such as packing, storage-in-transit, or vehicle transport. Federal regulations require interstate shipments to be weighed at an official scale. Your Allwest consultant provides a detailed, itemized estimate before your move.

Do you handle international moves?

Yes, absolutely. We've built a network of international move coordinators that can manage the entire process.

Local Moving in Washington

What is considered a local move?

Per the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, a local move refers to any relocation in the State of Washington which travels 55 miles or less from origin to destination. Allwest handles local moves throughout Western Washington and the greater Puget Sound.

What if I need to move farther than 55 miles?

Any move travelling farther than 55 miles is considered an "intra-state" move. The moving process is largely the same, with the main difference being how the moving estimate is generated. Instead of using an hourly rate, a specific formula derived from the actual number of miles x the weight of the shipment is used. Feel free to reach out to an Allwest Relocation Consultant for more information.

What does a local move cost?

A local move is charged by the hour, using a rate formulated by the number of movers, drivers and trucks needed. The exact cost depends on a variety of factors such as the size of your home, if there is packing involved, access to your home and more. Every Allwest moving team is extensively trained in industry best practices to ensure the most efficient and safe relocation possible. To get started, simply fill out our free online estimate form or call us directly at 800-634-3155.

Do I need to tip my movers? How much do you tip movers?

Tipping movers is customary but not required. A common guideline is $20-$40 per mover for a half-day move and $40-$60 per mover for a full-day move, or roughly 10-20% of the total move cost split among the crew. Tips are always appreciated for careful, professional work but are entirely at your discretion. Allwest crews never pressure customers regarding tips.

Can movers move my belongings on the same day?

Sometimes, yes. Allwest can occasionally accommodate same-day and short-notice moves depending on crew and truck availability. Same-day moves are easier to arrange outside of peak season (May-September) and midweek. Call us at 800-634-3155 to check availability for your date.

How long does a local move take?

Most local moves are completed in a single day. The exact time depends on the size of your home, how much you're moving, access at both locations, and whether packing is involved. A studio or one-bedroom may take just a few hours, while a larger home can take most of a day. Your consultant will give you a time estimate with your quote.

Can you move me on the same day I call?

Sometimes! it depends on crew and truck availability. Same-day and short-notice moves are easier to arrange outside of peak season and mid-week. Give us a call at 800-634-3155 and we'll let you know what we can do for your date.

Do you move apartments and condos?

Yes. We handle moves of all sizes, including apartments, condos, townhomes, and high-rise buildings. Let us know about any building requirements such as elevator reservations, certificate of insurance, or loading-dock access, and we'll plan around them.

Do I need to be present during my move?

Yes, you or an authorized representative should be present at both the pickup and delivery locations. You'll need to be available to direct the crew, answer questions, verify the inventory, and sign paperwork. If you can't be present, you can designate an authorized adult to act on your behalf — just let us know in advance. Of course, we understand there may be circumstances where you can't be there. We're happy to work with you.

Packing & Crating Services

Is it worth hiring professional packers?

Professional packing significantly reduces the risk of damage to your belongings and saves you considerable time and stress. If you've moved before you know — it can be a lot of work! Our experienced packers use industry-leading materials and techniques to protect everything from everyday items to fragile antiques and high-value pieces.

How much does professional packing cost?

Packing costs depend on the size of your home and the volume of items to be packed. Contact Allwest for a free estimate that includes packing — we'll give you a clear, accurate cost before moving day.

Can I pack some items myself and have Allwest pack the rest?

Absolutely. We offer full-service packing for your entire home or partial packing for specific rooms or items. Just let your relocation consultant know what you need when you request your estimate.

What packing materials does Allwest use?

We use professional-grade boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, furniture pads, and custom crating for specialty and high-value items. All materials are specifically designed to protect your belongings throughout the entire move.

Do you provide moving supplies and packing materials?

Yes. Allwest offers a full range of professional packing supplies including boxes in all sizes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, mattress bags, wardrobe boxes, and specialty containers for dishes, electronics, and fragile items. You can purchase only what you need, and our team can advise on quantities during your free estimate.

Do you unpack after the move as well?

Yes. Ask about adding unpacking services to your move. Our team can unpack boxes, remove packing materials, and help get you settled in your new home faster.

Where can I get moving boxes?

You can purchase moving boxes directly from Allwest, along with all the packing materials you need — including specialty boxes for dishes, wardrobes, and electronics. Many customers also find free boxes at local grocery and liquor stores, but professional moving boxes are sturdier and sized for safe stacking and transport. Many of the big hardware stores also carry moving boxes and supplies. Ask about packing supplies when you request your free estimate.

How far in advance should I start packing?

If you're packing yourself, we recommend starting 2-3 weeks before your move, beginning with items you use least often (seasonal items, books, décor) and saving daily essentials for last. If Allwest is handling your packing, our team can complete it efficiently in the days just before your move.

How many boxes will I need for my move?

The number of boxes depends on your home's size and how much you own. As a rough guide, a one-bedroom home often needs 20-30 boxes, while a three-bedroom home may need 60 or more. Your relocation consultant can help you estimate quantities, and we offer all the boxes and supplies you'll need.

How do you protect fragile or valuable items?

We use professional-grade materials including bubble wrap, packing paper, furniture pads, and custom wooden crating for fragile, high-value, and specialty items like fine art, antiques, and mirrors. Each item is wrapped and packed using techniques designed to protect it through every stage of the move.

Can you provide custom crates for special items?

Yes. Allwest builds custom wooden crates sized to the exact dimensions of fine art, sculptures, antiques, marble or glass tabletops, and other high-value or fragile pieces for maximum protection during transit. Ask your consultant about custom crating when you request your estimate.

Is your storage climate-controlled?

Can you store my belongings between moves?

Do you store vehicles, boats and motorhomes?

We do not store cars or motorhomes. We do store motorcycles, riding lawnmowers, ATV's, kayaks/canoes. Boats are on a case-by-case basis mostly depending on the size. Give us a call and we can let you know right away.

Financing Your Move

Will applying affect my credit score?

The initial 60-second application is a soft credit inquiry, which does not affect your credit score. A hard credit pull only happens when you finalize an offer with a specific lender — and at that point, you've already chosen to move forward.

Is everyone approved for 0% financing?

Financing rates are as low as 0% for qualified applicants. Your specific offers will depend on factors like your credit profile, the financing amount, and the lender's terms. Enhancify shows you all available offers so you can compare and choose what works best.

How much can I finance?

Financing amounts and terms vary by lender. Enhancify will show you available options based on your application. Most moving customers finance the full cost of their move, but you can also finance a portion if you prefer to pay part upfront.

What can the financing be used for?

Funds can be used for any aspect of your Wheaton/Allwest move — including local moves, long-distance moves, packing services, storage, custom crating, and add-on services. Once you receive funding, you have full flexibility in how to use it for your move.

Do I have to use financing if I apply?

No. Applying through Enhancify shows you what offers you may qualify for — but you're under no obligation to accept any of them. If you decide financing isn't right for you, simply don't finalize an offer.

What if I have questions before applying?

You can chat with Enhancify directly at (813) 212-3073 for questions about the application, lender options, or terms. For questions about your move, contact Allwest at 800-634-3155.
